The Ice Stadium in Cortina d'Ampezzo, built for the Winter Olympic Games of 1956, was originally designed by architect Mario Ghedina, a native of Cortina, but then living in Rome.
The system had to meet the following criteria:
- allow a seated audience of 7-8,000
- be equipped with changing rooms for 180 athletes
- have at least one ice rink of 30 m x 60 m
The deteriorating state of a large part of the building and its appurtenances, and the changed context of needs, made it impossible to postpone an intervention that had to reinterpret and reconfigure a meaningful and unique building.
The main design issues relate to:
- re-use of a multi-purpose sports and entertainment facility
- redefinition of the visibility curve of the grandstands, to provide an enjoyable view to all seats
- redefinition of the paths
- access and fruition to people with disabilities
- acoustics of the building
- reduction of operating costs
- retrofitting of the facility
