The design of the Iran Pavilion for Expo 2015 Milan stems from a synthesis of the values of the Iranian people materialized in the sofreh, the ritual cloth lying on the table during the holidays. The pavilion was in fact modelled on the shape of a rolled up cloth crossed by a wind tower, a recurring element of the traditional architecture of the desert areas.
The curved structure, spanning over 89 m x 15 m, lies on the ground to rise up to 12.9 m, and is supported by a skeleton of arches and pillars of steel profiles, externally clad in ETFE and internally covered with a triangular plot of wooden panels inspired by Persian mosaic. This originates a space which is open, but covered, that welcomes the exhibition, a series of wooden caskets to enclose ingredients and herbs typical of Iranian cuisine.
Below are the service spaces for visitors and staff - VIP area, kitchen, restaurant, shops, offices, prayer rooms.
