The project envisages the doubling of a section of the Cagliari - Golfo Aranci line, having length of about 38 km, of which 11 in variant and 27 alongside the existing track, located between the stations of Decimomannu to the south and San Gavino to the north, in the Provinces of Cagliari and Medio Campidano.

A new station for both freight and passengers is provided, servicing the town of San Gavino, as well as the adaptation of existing stations.
The existing track is affected by numerous crossings which will be eliminated, through the adoption of underpasses and / or overpass, and the redefinition of part of the existing urban roads network.

The interference of the track with numerous rivers with strong flows and the presence of ground waters, surfacing almost everywhere, strongly influenced the setting of the elevation profile of the line, to the extent that an accurate hydrological and hydraulic study allowed to define the technical parameters of the level indicators along the track.
